Choosing a waiting period
- Check the job post first. If it gives a hiring timeline or closing date, plan around it.
- Start with 5 to 10 days if there's no timeline. That is a common range for a first follow-up.
- Allow longer for big employers. Large hiring processes often move more slowly, so use a custom period.
- Limit yourself to one or two follow-ups. Space them out and keep each message short.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I wait before following up after applying?
A common approach is about one to two weeks, unless the job post gives a timeline. If it does, follow that.
Which waiting period should I choose?
If the job post lists a timeline, use it. Otherwise 5 to 10 days is a common starting point. You can also enter a custom period from 1 to 90 days.
Is the follow-up date calculator free?
Yes. You can use it without paying or signing up.
What should I write in a follow-up message?
Keep it short, polite and specific. Mention the role and the date you applied, and restate your interest in one sentence. Our follow-up email templates give you a starting point.
